On the complexity of side-channel attacks on AES-256 - methodology and quantitative results on cache attacks

چکیده
Larger key lengths translate into an exponential increase in the complexity of an exhaustive search. Side-channel attacks, however, use a divide-and-conquer approach and hence it is generally assumed that increasing the key length cannot be used as mitigation. Yet, the internal round structure of AES-256 and its key-scheduling seem to hinder a direct extension of the existing attacks on AES-128 and thus challenge the proposition above. Indeed two consecutives round keys are required to infer the secret key and the MixColumns operation, not present in the last round, apparently increases the key search complexity from to 2 to 2. Additionally, it is unclear what the impact of the different round structures is on the number of required measurements. In this paper, we explore this question and show how to attack AES-256 with a key search complexity of O(2). This work confirms with practical experiments that AES-256 only offers a marginal increase in resistance against the attacks –both in the required number of measurements and in the required processing time. As an example, we quantify this increase for the case of cache-based side-channel attacks: AES-256 only provides an increase in complexity of 6 to 7 compared to cache-based attacks on AES-128.

Enhanced Flush+Reload Attack on AES
In cloud computing, multiple users can share the same physical machine that can potentially leak secret information, in particular when the memory de-duplication is enabled. Flush+Reload attack is a cache-based attack that makes use of resource sharing. T-table implementation of AES is commonly used in the crypto libraries like OpenSSL. Several Flush+Reload attacks on T-table implementat...
متن کاملA Systematic Study of Cache Side Channels Across AES Implementations
While the AES algorithm is regarded as secure, many implementations of AES are prone to cache side-channel attacks. The lookup tables traditionally used in AES implementations for storing precomputed results provide speedup for encryption and decryption. How such lookup tables are used is known to affect the vulnerability to side channels, but the concrete effects in actual AES implementations ...
متن کاملA comprehensive study of multiple deductions-based algebraic trace driven cache attacks on AES
Existing trace driven cache attacks (TDCAs) can only analyze the cache events in the first two rounds or the last round of AES, which limits the efficiency of the attacks. Recently, Zhao et al. proposed the multiple deductions-based algebraic side-channel attack (MDASCA) to cope with the errors in leakage measurements and to exploit new leakage models. Their preliminary results showed that MDAS...
متن کاملMemJam: A False Dependency Attack against Constant-Time Crypto Implementations
Cache attacks exploit memory access patterns of cryptographic implementations. Constant-Time implementation techniques have become an indispensable tool in fighting cache timing attacks. These techniques engineer the memory accesses of cryptographic operations to follow a uniform key independent pattern. However, the constant-time behavior is dependent on the underlying architecture, which can ...
متن کاملTrace-Driven Cache Attacks on AES
Cache based side-channel attacks have recently been attracted significant attention due to the new developments in the field. In this paper, we present efficient trace-driven cache attacks on a widely used implementation of the AES cryptosystem. We also evaluate the cost of the proposed attacks in detail under the assumption of a noiseless environment. We develop an accurate mathematical model ...
